Journal- Codes

Today i researched the codes and conventions of a music video because a few days earliuer we have been given our briefs. the codes and conventions of a music video are very much the same in each video. The codes are there to follow but also need to be there to challenge them aswell, researching this was ver informative for me and incitful to what our music video will have to be..

Punto Evo Advert

This is the Fiat Punto advert, i really liked this advert because it shows the male and female characters are being controlled by the music in a voo doo like effect and this gave me the idea of doing this in my groups music video. The video is really clever the way the male and female are being control;led and portrtaying the dance moves in the car, to the dance club, this is very effective and therefore giving me the thought of using it.

The Image of out Actress

Our actress who is going to be the leading person in our music video will need a look, from looking at a variety of images that could work we have decided to choose our look from a trendy, up to date style icon, Cheryl Cole. We would like our actress to be very glamourous but pure at the same time looking very natural, we would also like our actress to wear bright colours to stand out in comparison to other actors performing. We as a group have looked at an outfit worn by Cheryl, it is a beautiful bright yellow dress with bright pinky red lipstick, looking beautiful with the look, we are also going to distort the colours further to make our actress stand out even further. The pictures below show our actresses look...

I'm a dreamer.....

The song for our music video is 'I'm a dreamer' by Living Joy. The song Living joy is from the dance genre and was chosen by the group because it will be a different video from our previous tasks, and also it would be fun to produce an upbeat dance video.

Digi-pack

Digibacks are very similar to actual CD's, the only difference is that a digipack contains exclusive material to advertise to the fans buying the CD. There is also a section for the lyrics and exclusive merchandise too. For my groups genre dance, i have researched a few digipacks from this genre to get a sense of what a dance genre would be like.
From researching the dance genre digipacks i have found that dance digipacks are colourful with neon/ bright colours.

Music Video Practice

I am really excited about beginning to film for our music video, therefore i decided to go and create a very simple music video to experiment and see how hard it is to cut two shots together to keep the continuity throughout. Although our music video has a dance genre, i still wanted to try this because it allowed me to experiment with a range of shots, practice my editing on final cut pro and i believe it is good preparation for me personally when it comes to my group filming. I really enjoyed making this simple video and will guarantee that i will enjoy making my actual music video....

Time Lapse 3

This is another time lapse showing another shot we would like to include in our music video. Also i believe this was really successful for me personally because the first two i made were in imovie, but when making this time lapse in final cut pro i found that i can make the lapse more effective by recording for a longer amount of time and therefore producing a better time lapse for my groups music video.

Dance Genres

Dance is a very unique and varied genre in comparison to other genres, dance music can be categorised in many different types within the genre. The variety of dance music includes:
For my groups genre of dance, we have looked at the different conventions and the variety of the music we have to match our video with, with the variety on offer to use it could be seen as a positive but also a negative as we have lots of way we could produce the video and we do not want to make a music video that does not fit with the video. One of the tracks we are looking at using is 'Im a dreamer' by

Codes and Conventions of music Videos

Every music video has there own unique approach, but the codes and conventions are always the same. When looking at the codes and conventions they are there to follow the structure of music video because without following them, it could may not be seen as a music video. The codes are especially there to construct meanings in media texts.

There are two different ways a music video can be, either:
Technical:
  • The way the music video is constructed in way to create meaning
  • Camera Angles such as the different angles and shots
  • Editing- How fast the video will reflect the song, Genre
  • Sound- Diegetic or Non diegetic sound, sound to match the genre
Symbolic:
  • Meaning has more then meets the eye
  • Stronger emotion, Facial expressions
  • Mise En Scene- Whats in the frame
The codes and conventions are there not to be broken, and are there to give the ways in which a music video should made. The codes and conventions are not set in stone but can be adapted, some music video directors choose to challenge the codes but it is never good to challenge the codes and conventions to much because it could turn out that the music video will not look like a music video first and foremost and secondly challenging may lead to a music falling out the genre of what you want it to be.

Styles of a music video
There are different ways a music video can be constructed, this is due to the different genres in the music industry and also the way the artist will be portrayed. These are:
  • Performance- Band/Artist singing
  • Narrative- Has a story during the video
  • Mixture- This is when the video has a narrative and also a performance together
  • Cameo- The band are in the narrative of the song but do not perform the song
  • Animation- Digitally made
Camera
With a music video the camera shots are really important for the people watching because they can only see whats on the screen, therefore a variety of shots should be used to give the viewer an all round view of the video, but the variety depends on the genre whether to have so much variety in the shots. Popular shots that are really effective are:
  • Close up- The close up shot is really effective in music videos, especially in performance music videos. Close up shots could be of the lips, guitar strings, any possible way and it will be successful, extreme close ups are also very effective too.
  • Birds eye View/Crane- This shot is good because it will enable the shot to hover, in the case of a performance, it could be used as a shot to hover over the stage
  • Low angles- This will be to show the artist or band in a dominant frame of the video
  • Long Shots- This shot is constantly used and it just gives a music video a shot that you can always go back to in the video, extreme long shots are also used frequently.
  • Pans/Tilts- These shots are used for the artist/bands if they want to change to another band member
  • Tracking- This is a shot that is very frequently used to track the artists/ bands movement in the song to ensure they keep center of the frame
Editing
In the case of editing, it simply has to match the pace of the song. Techniques included with editing are:
  • Jump Cuts- Very effective for an artist when singing in a new frame and place, but the continuity and flow of the song continuing with the artist is good.
  • Split screens- Using CGI, Split screens showing two different shots at the same time.
  • Choosing Diegetic sound to include
  • Adjusting sound level in some parts of the video
Mise En Scene
The mise en scene will depend on what kind of genre the music video is. The main focus of mise en are scene:
  • Props- What is used in the video, Equipment reflecting genre
  • Costume- What the Artist/band wear
  • Location- Where the video will be set.
  • Facial Expressions- The way the artist expresses emotions in the video whether strong or weak emotions.

Experiment-2

The second clip is another time lapse i did. This time i did a time lapse at 6 o'clock focusing on the clouds and their movements, i decided to do a time lapse of the clouds because they are never noticed when they move, therefore over a time it will show the vast movement in a sped up video.

Journal- Experiment 2

In the next few days i decided to do another timelapse of the clouds, i chos ethe clouds because i thought that the clouds are never noticed when they are move, therefore focusing on them it will show the timelapse with more movement.

Journal- Experimenting with Time

Today i chose to experiment with a timelapse because this is one of the ideas our group is thinking about using. The experiment invloved me leaving my video camera watching my street for a eight hour period throughout the night. When speeding it up all that i noticed was the clouds movement over the period, it was good to do because it showed what would look good to timelapse and gave me an idea of what our group will have to do.

Experiment

This is an experiment i decided to try. As our group would like to do a time lapse i decided to experiment and see if it is easy or hard to do well. When discussing as a group, we all looked at a range of different time lapses, from this we then decided what went well and could be interpreted into our music video. This video is a time lapse of 8 hours of my street condensed into a one minute sequence.
